Permission to extend period of stay: Article 21 of the Immigration Control Act
外国人が、現在と同じ在留資格のもとで、現在許可されている在留期限より長く、継続して日本に在留したい時に必要とされる許可です。

This permission is required when you would like to continue to stay in Japan longer than your expiry date of stay permitted at present under the same status of residence.
